How to Measure a Box: The Professional L x W x H Guide

Getting the dimensions of a cardboard box right is the most critical step in protecting your products and minimizing shipping costs. At Lion Packaging, we emphasize accuracy to ensure your supply chain remains efficient.

1. Internal vs. External Dimensions

Always provide Internal Dimensions for manufacturing.

  • Internal Dimensions: The usable space inside.
  • External Dimensions: Used by couriers to calculate hacimsel (volumetric) weight.

2. The Standard Measurement Order

Packaging measurements are always recorded in this order:

  1. Length (L): The longer side of the opening.
  2. Width (W): The shorter side of the opening.
  3. Height (H): The depth from the opening to the base.

3. Precise Calculation

Measure in millimetres (mm). For the total surface area of a standard box, the formula for this is:

$$Area = 2 \times (L \times W + L \times H + W \times H)$$
